How to compare fractions

You can compare two fractions using the following methods:

  • Decimal Method
  • Common Denominator Method:
  • Cross Multiplication Method

Decimal method:

Compare 4/5 and 1/5

4/5 = 0.8

1/5 = 0.2

Since 0.8 is bigger than 0.2, 4/5 is bigger than 1/5

Common denominator method:

When the denominator is the same, the bigger fraction is the fraction with the bigger numerator.

For example, 4/3 is bigger than 2/3

When the numerator is the same, the bigger fraction is the one with the smaller denominator.

For example, 6/2 is bigger than 6/3

If the numerators or the denominators are not the same, just look for equivalent fractions with the same denominator. Then, compare the numerators.

For example, compare 3/4 and 2/3

An equivalent fraction for 3/4 is 9/12

An equivalent fraction for 2/3 that has a denominator of 12 is 8/12

Since 8/12 is smaller 9/12, 2/3 is smaller than 3/4
